Winter Activities at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park

This week instead of design talk, we’re going to talk Nebraska. The first significant snowfall just began early this morning and it creates the perfect opportunity to indulge in some winter wonderland outdoor fun. Now Nebraska may not be mountainous, and it certainly doesn’t have any natural ski hills but there are some great wintertime things to do at Mahoney State Park. Amongst those things are sledding, cross country skiing, ice skating, ice fishing and special holiday activities to name a few. Now some of these depend on having some good snow and cold so make sure you confirm availability before you take the trip over there. The park is located in southeastern Nebraska along Interstate 80. I’ve heard recommendation for days trips as well as making a weekend out of this visit, but the park has notoriously popular cabins so book in advance. There is also a lodge.

Sledding

Who doesn’t love to go sledding? Find yourself a nice steep, or maybe not so steep, hill at the park, bring your sled or your tube or even a toboggan and go, go, go. They recommend a specific hill behind the Activity Center for those who care to venture a trip down. It’s a nice long run that will make the kids feel like the fun never ends. Just remember to bundle up. And don’t worry about the conditions, the park has a snow making machine to help add snow to the hill if we don’t get enough naturally. Best of all is it’s free and clear of trees to avoid accidents.

Ice Skating

There is an outdoor ice-skating rink as well for the aspiring ice skaters in your family. Skate rentals are only $3. Admission is free and it’s attached to the indoor playground so when the kids get cold, they can play at one of the many indoor activities available including a big climbing wall. Wow!

Ice Fishing

For fishing enthusiast there is a nice lake for catching fish. Make a hole in the ice, rig up your fishing pole and hunker down while you wait for a one to bite. With the right gear, you can stay warm and very entertained. It’s a great family activity providing the kiddos have enough patience. Ice fishing at the park is also free and occasionally there will be a sponsored ice fishing for beginners’ event where they will show you how it’s done. A park entry permit is required, and all fishing regulations apply but they will give you instruction and even provide gear. These events are usually by registration only. It’s a good idea to check the Nebraska Game Parks calendar when planning your trip.

Cross Country Skiing

Throughout Mahoney State Park there are several miles of hiking trails that are groomed in the winter months for cross-country skiing. Dress accordingly and go for a scenic gaunt through the park. Franky, the idea of cross-country skiing makes me tired just thinking about it, but I have friends the highly recommend it. They say it’s a good form of exercise and, depending on where you go, it can be very peaceful and beautiful. I couldn’t find out whether you can rent equipment for this at the park but I’m certain if you call first the park staff will be able to give you some direction.
