Read MoreIn all my years in design I’ve never seen tile as exciting as the tile that is out today. My partnership with Nathan Homes gives me an opportunity to keep up with the latest and greatest and use the most recent styles on a regular basis. There are many tile materials, colors, sizes, shapes, and patterns making it easy to find something to suit each client’s taste. Take a journey with me down this lovely, tiled lane and discover all that is possible.
Antiqued Pattern Tile
This colorful, vibrant and yet a little bit boho tile is my favorite. It’s called Islander and we used an 8-inch by 8-inch size. It really pops even in earth tones. Adding some pattern to your tile design brings fun, interesting, and eye-catching style to any project. It’s the perfect splash to contrast solid colors like we did in our Riviera model bath with solid beige tile on the side walls. Additionally, these tiles are finished in an antiqued surface to make them more appealing and artistic. We found these gems at Floor Source here in Omaha Nebraska.
Marble Look Without the Maintenance
Want to create a custom marble look without the expense of marble? This tile product made in Spain and sold by Omaha based vendor Premier Tile is the ticket. It’s called Conde and not only is it more cost effective but the white with gray veining is rich and elegant. It also doesn’t have the same upkeep as real stone which made it optimal to use in our Organic Modern model to make the master bath shower a spa like experience. We complimented it with octagonal mosaic tile on the floor and high-end fixtures to finish off the space.
Colors and Shapes
This triangle configuration was created with four separate tiles in different gray colors. It’s an accent tile combined with subway tile for a pretty contrast sold by Premier Tile. We chose this geometric design to make our Prairie Zen model Jack and Jill bath stand out as a unique yet stylish design. It matches the Zen yet modern them in this house and is soft despite the hard-edged shapes. The color of course is muted so as not to cause too much chaos and to accent rather than be the center of the bath plan. It pops without overwhelming which is what I was going for in this space.

Who thinks about these things? Designers do.
Believe it or not the pièce de resistance of a great bathroom design can be the toilet. Recently, Kohler hosted an event at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery on toilet trends for next year. My design team and I were fortunate enough to be able to attend. We were excited to see what is new in styles, technology, and mounting options. And we found out there were many new things to see.
One Piece or Two Piece? That is the Question
There are choices for one piece or two-piece toilets as well as one piece tankless and they come in traditional and more contemporary to modern styles. Tomorrow’s two-piece options are more cost effective and a little bit more on the traditional side. In terms of functionality, there are several choices of flush levers both on the side of the tank, on the front of the tank or directly on top making the look of tank more streamlined. Each one has it’s aesthetic benefits as well as functional benefit. One-piece options slant toward the more modern to ultra-modern style and can be tankless. This design option tends to be more sleek and less flashy in terms of looks. and Either way, there’s one for everyone’s taste.
Technology
Surprise, surprise there are commodes that have one touch functionality. Some options come with a full complement of convenient features including heated seat, customizable cleansing, night-light, hands-free opening/closing, automatic flush, plus a touchscreen remote. The styles, again, tend to be more on the modern side for these toilets and the price tag is higher so you might want to reserve this one for the master bath with more custom features. And they come in interesting colors like white with rose gold trim. Check out our video with a snippet of a new high-tech toilet.
Wall Mounted
New 2021 options for wall mounted toilets are my personal favorite. They are great for smaller bathrooms, making the room look larger, and they have clean sleek lines that simplify your design. It almost looks as if the toilet is floating. Choices and prices also vary for these. They can be more affordable then you think, and they come in mod styles or more classic choices. Let’s not forget the ability to easily clean around the bowl. Also, there is a color choice of black in addition to white.
Coming Soon
As a designer, I have the privilege of attending previews of the latest and greatest designer items. Recently, I attended an event highlighting the new designs for bathroom vanities and faucets. I know, it doesn’t sound that exciting, but you would be surprised to know that things have changed, and the 2021 trends are fantastic. For example, there are brand new bowl shapes like molded porcelain sinks. They are a new material spin on a once popular molded sink from the 80s. The new bowl shapes with rounded edges are simple, classic and beautiful.
Colors, Colors and More Colors
Not only are the new 2021 model sinks coming in brand new solid colors, but they come in patterns as well. I saw a bathroom sink with a black background and pink, white and green floral design inside. Not only was it unique but it wasn’t busy the way you might guess. Check out the video included in this blog. And the contrast of the black against the florals was surprisingly traditional with a modern twist.
What Matches Those Exquisite Sinks
One of the most exciting things about all the new sink designs was how they were paired with bathroom faucets. New Kohler faucets for 2021 span the gamut with a combination of new touch free and one touch technology and finishes in colors like…wait for it…Ombre. Yes, Ombre is a latest new faucet color. And not just one set of colors, it comes in a couple of different Ombre colors. Other beautiful finishes are a high gloss copper and black chrome. They come in modern styles to go with the cutting edge, and might I say, fabulous colors.
Natural and Organic Materials Make a Comeback
Spa bathrooms have never really gone out of style with organic materials like teak shower mats, clean lines, and soothing colors. In fact, we used a beautiful wood sink bowl in one of the model homes we designed. Amazingly its beautiful and functional. The possibilities are endless with todays materials and finishes. You just have to imagine it.
