My personal favorites are in the home décor area located in building 1 on floors 1-15. Included is lighting, linens & textiles, wall décor and rugs and let’s not forget all the other wonderful accessories. If you want to find items to complete your design projects, this is the area that I recommend. There is a lot of fabulous stuff here. My favorites are the wicker and rattans and some of the new upholsteries I find at this market. Designers will often take their whole team with them to this market because it’s such an inspirational place. I’m excited to find out the summer trends for 2021 and incorporate what I learn into my new construction designs.

Read MoreHopefully, you got that little play on words in the title. Today’s talk is on the increasingly popular she shed. Ever since we’ve had to stay at home more and the work life balance has become trickier, folks are looking for the most cost-effective way to increase the square footage in their home. Well, you’ve heard of the man cave. Now we have the she shed. Adding an oversized shed to your backyard will certainly give you the quiet space you need to work as well as to relax. They come in many sizes and can be designed any way you like. As long as your neighborhood allows sheds you can add a she shed without the hassle of building permits, etc. It might be a different story if you add electricity, cable or other utilities so check that out during the planning phase of your new space.
When deciding on what you want your she shed to be like, consider its function. Are you wanting every comfort of home? If so, plan for a bigger budget because you’ll likely have to have some professional help with electrical and maybe plumbing as well as higher cost materials in there. The whole purpose of a she shed is to have your own feminine space to do whatever you enjoy doing without interruptions so glam it up if that’s your thing. Making it feel personal to you is important to its ambiance and the way you feel when you’re hanging out in there. If you’re a girly girl then paint the interior with some pastels or hang up some velvet window coverings or even, consider a chandelier as your design focal point. If you’re into crafting then storage and shelving may be important to you while you’re in your room or if it’s sports, then a TV and your favorite sport paraphernalia may be the ticket for you. Either way, make it your happy space, whatever that means.
Not ready to shell out a ton of dough on your she shed. Doing a lot of the work yourself can be easier than you think. If you’re just wanting to get away from the daily mess and with some quite time, then all you need is some walls and perhaps some fun decorating. Buy yourself a premade shed, have it delivered, throw up some paint and put in some cute décor and voila, your all set with your own little get away. It can be more like glamping which, for those of you who don’t know, is fancy camping. Roughing it with some of the creature comforts of home. A throw rug and your favorite blanket may be all you need to get in a little nap time and recharge before you go back to being mommy or returning to corporate America.
While you’re online exploring ideas for your new she shed you may notice that there are companies out there that sell kits to build your own. They come complete with electrical, doors and windows. Providing you’re handy with tools, etc. you can simply buy one of these kits and build a beautiful custom design yourself. They look quite a bit like tiny guest homes or casitas. Also, on the do-it-yourself side are available plans for she sheds. Buy the plans and build it yourself or, better yet, hire someone to build from your plans. That way you get exactly what you want, and it’s professionally built. The possibilities are endless when you imagine and create it for yourself.
Well bye for now and good luck building your she shed if we’ve inspired you to do so. For more information on the Priority Group and how we can help you upgrade your home if a she shed is not for you, contact Sallie Elliott at 402-630-5953 or check out the possibilities at www.omahaprioritygroup.com.
Each year the parade comes to town so-to-speak. Last year we couldn’t celebrate new home builders because of the virus however this year the builders are rearing to show. The Parade of Homes is a new home builder showcase of the who’s who in new construction. Each builder will enter their homes in various neighborhoods and open them to the public. The homes will be top of the line with the latest and most beautiful designs and finishes. Price ranges vary so you can come shop for the one you might want to build as well as check out the ones that might not be in your price range just to get some ideas. This is certainly the place to go if you’re in the market for your dream home or even if you’re just looking for something entertaining to do with your weekend. There’s even some tech for those of your who love that. You can download an app to help guide you through the tour with directions and participating listing with photos and information. The parade will be held May 1st – 2nd and May 8th – 9th from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Last year there were thirty-four builders that were planning on participating. One of the builders that I want to highlight is our favorite and the one the Priority Group works with exclusively. Nathan Homes has been building homes since 2006. Nathan’s commitment to the client’s experience and unique home designs have been recognized by Houzz, Best of Houzz; American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Silver Awards since 2016; voted Best of Omaha from Local Best 2018; as well as features on the cover of Build Omaha, Parade of Homes and Home Inspiration. He and his team are dedicated to building the client’s perfect home that feels like you with a stress-free building process. I am a ASIID Allied Interior Designer that works with new home clients to help them choose all their design elements and make it fun and not overwhelming while helping them to stay in budget.

The kitchen island is painted a teal blue which brings some color to the neutral scheme of the home. And we added a little tile surprise in one of the bathrooms.I won’t tell you about that one. You’ll have to go see if for yourself. And the best part is the lot.It backs to a walking trail!Yes, walk right out of your home and onto a trail for some exercise and fresh air.

Summertime is just around the corner and with it comes outdoor fun. Some of us could have any old backyard space but if you’re a designer like me, having the perfect outdoor space is essential. We recently renovated out backyard to make a multi-level patio paradise perfect for entertaining or romantic evenings with just the hubby and me. From pavers to pergolas and, of course, a hot tub, we decided to go big or go home. The home we live in is our downsize home, so the outdoor space is super important to us since it’s essentially and extension of our smaller indoor space. I was shooting for an tranquil, oasis feeling when you walk through the sliding glass doors and onto the deck then down onto the patio and into the yard. There’s an eating space and a drinking wine space as well. There are multiple spaces for seasonal planting and of course we added a tree as our center piece. Since the space is compact, we added the spa to the lower level of the patio for some privacy. We also installed our fence horizontally instead of vertically for a different design rather than the old-fashioned boring stuff.
Indoor Outdoor
Now we all know that when you entertain outdoors you’ve got to, of course, be outdoors. But the way you get there matters. Accordion glass doors are the latest and greatest in creating indoor/outdoor space. They allow you to open up an entire wall so that the indoor living space flows directly to the outdoor space making the two into one. I love this look since it’s expansive and you don’t have to add square footage. You simple open the doors and voila, you have added onto your home. Guests can easily move from inside your home to the outside. The only caveat is bugs. If you live in a place where there are a lot of bugs, you might get a couple in your house. Otherwise, the entertainment space and additional light added are amazing. They also cost a bit more but well worth it.
Pavers, Concrete and Stone
Obviously, what you build the actual patio out of is the most important part of your outdoor space. The awesome thing is there are a lot of materials to choose from. For a more contemporary look there are pavers. They somehow create a cozy and comfortable outside option. They come in beautiful colors and textures but the most common are about twice the size of a normal brick and grey beige in color. Using them to create any shape is easy. Long term maintenance may be a tiny bit more but very little. Concrete is one of the most versatile materials to use. It can be colored, stained and finished in flat or high gloss. Concrete can also be stamped to look like pavers or to create a beautiful symmetrical design for a more modern look. Natural stone is my favorite. With finished or natural edges stone gives your patio a luxury feeling. It’s more expensive, mainly because of the labor but the high end feel it gives the space is well worth it. Especially if you plan to spend time in your yard.
What’s Popular in Patio Accoutrement
There’s nothing like the wonderful sound of a trickling water feature. Adding one in the right spot give that spot a spa feeling. Water is relaxing and soothing. From fountains to ponds with and without fish, a water feature really adds esthetic value to an outdoor space. Now add some fire and you have something that pops. Fire pits, outdoor fireplaces and the latest and greatest…fire pots. Those are modern pot shaped fire bowls if you can envision. Add a fountain to one of those bowls and you have the perfect Zen combination of fire and water. And you have the perfect conversation pieces to talk about. Fire bowls are popular for from things such as around a pool or hot tub or even around a pond or a large pond.
Covered or Not Covered
Covered or partially covered patios are extremely popular. Typically, the roof line is extended from the house to cover a deck or patio that is attached to the home. It creates a covered space so that you can enjoy the outdoors without being out in the rain and gives you some shade on a hot day. Pergolas are also popular. Mainly for adding shade they are also a beautiful design feature and add dimension where you have a lot of flat ground. Speaking of protection. Adding some privacy to your back yard doesn’t have to mean utilitarian materials or designs. Fencing materials such as aluminum gates can be ornate or modern in style but they do come in different styles as well as colors. You don’t have to compromise on style just because you need to fence your property. They also provide security. Half walls and privacy walls can also be super stylish. People often think of stone walls but there are wood walls that look very pleasing. Depending on the way they are installed. Separating your back yard with a half wall is a stylish way to break it up. Especially if it’s a large area. Creating an eating versus entertaining or sitting area is as important to the function or your yard as the design.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a pool, then you will love today’s pool talk. If you’re in the market for a pool, then Bell Pool & Spa is the place to go. Summertime is just around the corner and we all know that Nebraska can get pretty darn toasty some days. What better way to enjoy the hot weather than to cool down in a brand-new pool? And after last year, more people are staying at home and entertaining the family in their own pool. But demand is up…if you think you’re going to get a pool installed this year, think again. You’ll likely have to wait until next season and possible the season after that. This is how in demand pools are right now. So, if you’re ready, make a call and get started making plans for your very own pool.
Pool Shapes & Features
Rectangle shapes are the best if you’re looking to maximize space inside of the pool or if you’re a person who like to exercise by swimming laps since you can divide the pool up into lanes and swim a straight line. Kidney shaped pools don’t seem to be all that popular anymore, but I see a few here and there. Mostly in smaller backyards where space is a little more limited. Pools come in many shapes and sizes, some with grottos and some with waterfalls. Some with slides and some with diving boards. If you’re really lucky, you can get a walk-in pool that starts off very shallow at one end and gets deeper as you go toward the other side. No steps or ladders needed to enter the pool and smaller children can use the shallow end as a kind of wading area without having to be courageous enough to get in deeper.
Spas & Hot Tubs
These are my absolute favorite. In fact, I opted for a hot tub in my backyard instead of a pool. Not only is the hot water very therapeutic but I don’t have the maintenance of a large pool and my smaller backyard accommodates a hot tub much better. The babies come in all shapes and sizes. From swim spas that have their own jets/current to help you swim in place, to soaking spas with tons of jets to soothe the savage beast. That’s me after I exercise. You can get a small four-person hot tub and you can get them much larger for several people. They come contoured so that you can sit up and recline and some even have what they call foot volcanos. That is a large jet at the bottom of the tub that massages your feet. Heavenly! Don’t want to take care of one. Their very easy to maintain however you can hire a service to do it for you. Depends how involved you want to get. My favorite thing to do is get a cup of coffee and go soak early in the morning.
Saunas
Not a lot of homes have their own sauna, but they can also be very therapeutic. They’re especially nice for warming up before a workout. Sit in one for about ten minutes then start up some yoga or even cardio and it steps up the exercise a notch. They come in infrared now, so the heat is more even and not necessarily coming from one place inside the sauna. Or you can get a more traditional one with a hot box and lava rocks. I like the infrared because it feels cleaner to me but that’s just my opinion. I don’t necessarily have any proof to back that statement up. Whether you install one in your basement bathroom or put one in your workout area, they are pretty plan looking and won’t take away from the aesthetics of the room. If you’re considering one, I highly recommend it.
Pool Service & Repair
Bell Pool & Spa offer service and repair as well. If you’re buying a previously owned home with a pool that needs a little TLC or just needs to be caught up on its maintenance, it’s certainly nice to go to a reputable place for those things. I work with many clients who need pools repaired and in the new home market where homeowners want to install a pool when they build a home. Bell Pool is great for both types of work. And again, it’s best to work with a reputable place just like this one. For more information, go to https://www.bellpool.com/

We don’t really give too much thought to landscaping until we buy a brand-new home or a one that needs a little TLC. In fact, unless you have a problem with your current landscaping, it’s likely you’re in the majority of people who have never hired a landscaper. Since I’m a designer who works with a lot of new home builds and I’ve recently renovated my home, I know a little something about it. To start with, there’s no real trick to finding a landscaper but if you don’t get on his or her radar before springtime, you can be in for a long wait. You’ll certainly want to use a company you know and one that’s been recommended. The next thing is knowing what a realistic budget is so make sure you get a few quotes. Both big and small, we have a plenty of landscaping companies right here in town and I’m going to feature a few for you this week.
Patera
I would guess that Patera is a mid to larger company and they work quite a bit with developers and builders. I’ve also seen them do work for individuals and it’s good. They install softscapes and hardscapes as well as firepits, fireplaces, water features and outdoor lighting. Most of their projects are at least mid-sized and from the look of them they are likely also bigger budget projects, but their work is good and because of that it might be a little harder to get on their schedule. Take a look at some of their work. https://www.pateralandscaping.com/
Lanoha
They are a large garden center as well as a landscaping company for residential and commercial jobs as well as a landscape and turf maintenance company. This is one of my favorite places to go for my projects because I can see what they’ll be planting or installing before it gets done. They have a professional design center ready to assist and I would say the primarily work with bigger budgets. In this case, you get what you pay for. They really do exquisite work. But be prepared to plan ahead. They are one of the more popular places in town and if you’re not the first one in line so-to-speak you may wait a bit. Again, it’s worth it in this case. https://lanohanurseries.com/
Jensen Gardens
Located in Springfield, Nebraska this awesome place also has a nursery where they grow what they use in their projects. They say they can design anything you can imagine, and I believe it. And in the winter, they transform into a snow removal company. Though they wear many hats, they really are focused on the job at hand. From landscapes to hardscapes, outdoor kitchens, poolside patios and more, they really do, do it all. I like their work, including their designs. Check them out for yourself at https://landscapeomaha.com/
Clear Creek Landscapes
This little gem is a smaller landscaping company and I’ve used them for mulch mounds and hardscaping. Their prices are competitive and they’re hard-working and reliable young people. But make no mistake, I think they would be great for any job, big or small including outdoor transformations like a kitchen or a brand-new patio entertainment space with a pergola. They give me competitive, written bids and a concept drawing ahead of time so that I know exactly what to expect. You should expect that from any reputable company. I’m happy to say that all their work has been spot on and creative. And they’re not budget snobs. They’ll help you work within any budget. Also, they warranty their plants which is especially important here in Nebraska. https://clearcreeklandscapes.com/
Along with springtime comes one of my favorite holidays. Easter! Not only is it a great opportunity to for me to celebrate my faith, but it’s a great opportunity for me to gather my family close and feed them. I love to use my years of restauranteur experience and put out a beautiful spread. Each of my kids and grandkids has a favorite desert that I will make especially for them. And let’s not forget the Easter egg hunt in the backyard for the littles. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to watch them hunt, pick up an egg, put it in their baskets then drop it while picking up another egg. And when they open them up, the treasure inside just lights up their tiny faces. This season is all about the love for sure.
Table Decor
Every table should have the obvious staples like flatware and dishes but done in the right colors, they will brighten up the whole room. I like to use traditional pastels for the table because, well, that’s just my taste. Recently, greys and navy blues are popular as well. Those greys are more neutral and let you blend in color with other tabletop items. Navy blue is a very stately and formal look that really dresses up a table. Especially when you add gold or silver as an accent. Throw a pearl garland in there and you’re all set. Tap into some of your Christmas decorations for this look if they are neutral like the navy, silver, and golds. And do not forget the flowers. I use a large vase and over stuff it with tulips, lilies, sunflowers, greenery, and any other spring flowers I can find. These don’t have to be expensive. Now you can find beautiful budget friendly flowers in the floral department of your grocery store.
Let’s Eat!
Typically, the foods for this holiday are ham, salads, rolls, mashed or au gratin potatoes. But don’t fill up on the main course because, there’s dessert. There are plenty of places around town that sell great desserts, but I enjoy making my families favorites like trifles, red velvet cake with a homemade butter cream frosting and, of course, homemade cheesecake with a raspberry sauce on top. To die for. I’ll include the cheesecake recipe here because it’s an easy one to make and a fan favorite. If you’re more of a sipper than a dessert person than try an after-dinner dessert wine. There are plenty of vineyards around Nebraska where you can buy them. I personally like Soaring Wings in Springfield, NE.
Shhhh…I’m huntin’ wabbits… (anyone in my age group should get that one right away)
Don’t forget about the hunt. If you’re trying to be virus friendly, put one on in your backyard just for your kids or some neighborhood kids you know well and can trust to be protected. There are lots of little tips for a successful Easter egg hunt. I found a some great how to articles just by Googling. They’ll need to be colored first but luckily you can go out and buy an Easter egg coloring kit at most grocery stores. I like the old school kits with vinegar and food coloring but watch out, it’s an older kids kit because it stains and will not come clean. There are others though with paints and things to stick on the eggs and there are smaller kid friendly ones as well.
Whether you’re putting on the big shindig or you’re just having a few family members over, I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that you’re blessed. Enjoy those family and friends and take a moment to be grateful for them because I’m sure they’re grateful for you. Happy Easter ya’ll!

2021 Real Estate Market Check In
Well, the new year is well underway and 2021 is showing signs of becoming an even stronger real estate market than 2020. In addition to design work, I help my clients buy, sell, and build homes in Douglas county all the time and it’s a good benchmark county to compare to for the Nebraska metro area. The median household income for Douglas County is $67,133 and the average age is 35. Overall median closed prices for homes have steadily increased since 2011. To put it shortly, Douglas county is a thriving county in Nebraska.
New Construction
Closed sales for new homes are up throughout Douglas County compared to last year February year to date with an increase of 33.3% which means that people are building more this year at this time compared to last year. Additionally, the average closed price February year to date this year is up 15.5% compared to last year with a price of $384,351 this year over last year’s $332,740. Inventory for new homes is 185 this year compared to last year’s 366 which is up 49.5%. That means that demand is much higher than supply. With existing home sales being so competitive, more people are building and builders don’t have as much in inventory. In other words, they’re being sold as quickly as builders can build them.
Existing Homes
Closed sales for existing homes are down 4.7% February year to date this year versus last year. Days on the market for a home in February 2021 is 14 and in 2020 it was 25. Homes are selling faster. The average closed price of a home at the same point in this year compared to last year to date is up 13.8% for an average price of $245,830 and list price received is 100%. In my experience, homes sales have been extremely competitive and selling about 20 – 30K above listing. This February we have 290 existing homes in inventory compared to February 2020 when we had 672 home in inventory. That’s a decrease of 60% which is impressive. So…demand here is also much higher than supply.
The saving grace is that mortgage rates are still low which is giving buyers the ability to afford a more expensive home and they can afford to compete in this market. The challenge is finding a house to buy. Incredibly important to being successful when you’re a buyer is finding a real estate agent that has been in the business long enough to have a strong network of other real estate agents and can find you a home before it is on the market.

Spring is near and it’s time to give some consideration to decorating for this time of year. Yes, we like to decorate for the holidays like St. Patrick’s Day and Easter but there’s some all over the house transformations that go on which celebrate the newness of this time of year. This week’s blog is about how to give your home a fresh new look with paint and fabric colors and patterns as well as with a beautiful and not necessarily high maintenance garden for the outdoors which translates into fragrant flowers for the indoors. Come along with me as we delve into all the tips and tricks for decorating to suit the season.
Pillows and Linens
A springtime must is changing out kitchen and bath towels, bedding, curtains, and putting out some new pillows. Pastels and brighter colors represent this time of year. Flowers blooming outside and matching colors inside. Go ahead and brighten it up. Paint that rooms that you’ve been putting off all winter and transform it into something that makes you say ahhhhhh. Use beautiful leafy or flowery patterns in your linens to make the house feel fresh and outdoorsy. And do not forget the curtains. You’ll want to use lighter weight fabrics to let the breezes flow through the open windows like linen along with those lighter colors. Darker colors are warm for winter and heavier fabrics keep you warm for winter. Putting out a new tablecloth that is lighter and brighter is a great and inexpensive way to spruce up the kitchen.
Plates and Dishes and Flatware…oh my!
Not into table linens? Try some chargers underneath plates and bowls to bring a new look to the table. Dinnerware can be something that you use all year long if you get it in a neutral color that matches all the seasons like white. Buy a few colorful bowls to throw in there with a vase of flowers and some colorful cloth napkins and your set for springtime. There are plenty of choice for silverware as well. Various metals like stainless and gold look and the choices in styles vary quite a bit as well. If you want to take the springtime theme to a new level, try some forks with handles that look like sticks. I’ve seen them around a lot and they definitely suit.
Speaking of Flowers
Most of us like a beautiful garden in theory but couldn’t grown one if our lives depended on it. Some of us are blessed with a green thumb as my grandmother used to put it. Whichever you are, there’s a way to get something pleasing to the eye. Now I personally happen to be the not so green thumb type. I hire someone to do some of the planting for me but that’s not friendly for all budgets. The way to get something pretty in the springtime is to plan ahead during the previous fall. I’m talking about bulbs. Tulips, irises, and daffodils are just a few of the types of flowers that can grown from bulbs. If you follow the directions and plant them during the right time of year, you’ll get gorgeous flows the next spring. Voila! And let’s talk ornamental grasses. Too many to name, these are the best way to take up space in your yard, add dimension and color as well as have add some softness to hardscaping. All you must do is cut them back in the spring and they do their own thing the rest of the year. And there are outdoor pots. If you don’t have the necessary creativity for these, buy them in plastic pots, and put the plastic pots into nice decorative pots so it looks as if you arranged them yourself. This one is my favorite hack. I’ve even gone so far as to bury the plastic pot in potting soil to disguise it.
Do Not Forget to Clean and Declutter
Last week’s blog was on the topic of cleaning and decluttering but I can’t say enough about it. There’s no point in decorating for spring in pursuit of a fresh new look when you have all the wintertime dirt and clutter still handing around. If you don’t want to do this bit yourself, most housekeeping companies provide a one time deep clean service and will happily do it for you. In fact, my service is Maid Brigade here in Omaha. I’ve used them for years and they do a great job plus they knock it all out in short order. As far as decluttering, there are professionals for that as well. Hire one and take the headache out of getting rid of the things you don’t need or use anymore. They’ll help make the decisions and they know how to get you organized.
Well…that’s my two cents on springtime design, décor and more. If you’d like to read more of my blogs or find out how we can help you find a home go to www.omahaprioritygroup.com
Roughly 13% of Nebraskan’s are Irish so let’s get our Paddy O’Party on! Whether you’re having an online party, an in-person party or going out, here are some ideas for serving, family activities and a few of my pub and restaurant favs. And let’s not forget the virtual fun. We’re going to look Covid right in the face and say, I can adapt by creating a St. Pat’s day celebration that’s amazing regardless of the venue.
Table Settings
Green, green, and green. What can I say? Tis the season. The fortunate thing is that you can find Kelly green in so many things from plates to linens, greenery and, if you want to get ultra-crafty, then get out the green paint and decorate wine glasses or paint a glass vase or mason jar for flowers and plants. And don’t forget to add in the shamrock shape someplace. There are plenty of home goods stores that sell seasonal linens and dishware for this holiday so do it up. I enjoy taking advantage of after holiday sales and saving my treasures for next year.
Family Fun
Believe it or not there is a Gnome hunt at Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Nebraska city is known for being the birthplace or Arbor Day and they host a lot of lovely events like the Apple Jack Festival and Halloween egg hunts. But during this time of year, we’re apparently welcome to hunt up some Gnomes for St. Patrick’s Day. The event will be going on from March 6-14th. Find more information about it at www.arbordayfarm.org/events Also, consider spending the day at the Omaha Children’s Museum. Kids can create their own leprechaun trap in the Tinker Studio, learn about rainbows at their S.T.E.A.M. cart, make a leprechaun card for a friend, and go on a museum-wide hunt for magical pots of gold! Of course, there’s the original corn beef and cabbage dish for that comes to mind but where do we find other treats? If you’re in the mood for some traditional Irish fare, then Brazen Head Irish pub is the place for you. It’s well rated and has menu items like bangers & Mashed and corned beef and cabbage. www.brazenheadpub.com. They also have a celebration on St. Patrick’s Day with meal specials. There are certainly Irish pubs a plenty in some trendy areas like downtown Omaha as well as some out of the way places. A simple web search will help you find them all and give you important details like hours of operation, events, menus, and any restrictions.
Adult Fun
Now green beer may or may not be your thing on St. Pat’s but how about a fun pub crawl? It doesn’t much cooler than Omaha’s Old Market and that’s where you’ll find the Dubliner Pub certain to be on any pub crawl list with live Irish music, Irish whiskey and, yes, even green beer if you so choose. This spot is a neat basement location on Harney Street that you can’t beat. Put together your own crawl or sign up for an event online that will take you around town to the coolest Irish pubs for various libations. But don’t call me. I’m more of a stay at one place kind of girl. Usually, it’s my backyard deck.
Web Party Ideas
You don’t have to be an outdoor party animal this year. If you’re being cautious and want to remain indoors, there’s plenty of opportunity to part online with friends. Just login to Zoom or Microsoft Teams, throw on some green hats and celebrate in the new normal. I recommend creating an informal agenda for your online celebration or an outline or ideas list. That way you won’t run out of fun before you even get started. Begin with some quick intros and conversation. Catch up with folks you may not have seen in a while. Then quickly move on to online friendly games like trivia, Twenty Questions to help you get to know one another, and providing you have all adults, Cards Against Humanity is a blast.

Well…it’s that time again. Spring is just around the corner and we’ve got to do some work so we can enjoy our homes. Winter brought us a lot of snow this year in Nebraska which means a lot of the mud and sand came with it and got into our garages and entryways. And don’t forget about the home maintenance that needs doing. We tend to nest during the colder months which means we built up some clutter. And lastly, it’s time to put out the spring decorations and think about what plants we want to have in the yard this year.
Cleaning it Up
As I mentioned, a lot of the outdoors has been tracked indoors during the snowy weather we’ve recently had. That means that there is sand in your garage that needs sweeping, blowing, or hosing, dependent on how much you have in there. I drive a SUV with big tires, so I brought in a lot of debri that needed to be swept and then hosed. It was way too much to blow because I’d get it all over the other things also stored in that space. Removing all that nonsense from the garage floor will prevent it from further getting onto the floors in my home which, of course, now need cleaning. This is especially important if you have hardwood floors because the sand will scratch those if you keep walking over it. I personally like to vacuum the floors using a vacuum setting appropriate for floors and then mop. For my hardwoods, I just use a cleaner made for hardwood which is easy to find in any home improvement or grocery store.
Home Maintenance
Super important to the long life of your home is the maintenance that happens in springtime. You’ll want to caulk around windows and doors in case any of that material has disintegrated during winter. And it’s especially important to check your gutters to ensure they are functioning alright that way there are no wayward leaks that will damage your home. Check hose spigots to be sure they are functioning properly and there are no leaks. Wait until the weather is consistently over freezing before you do so and when it is, start up your sprinkler system. We’ve had plenty of water from the snow this season, but your grass will need the water with the upcoming warmer weather and so will blooming plants. Speaking of which it’s also, it’s time to start thinking about spring planting. If you have some spring bulbs that need planting, put those right into the ground. Think about what you want to put in your pots and make sure you get to the garden center when everything comes out in a couple of weeks. That way you get exactly what you want before they run out. And lastly, you may want to freshen your home with a new coast of interior or exterior paint depending on the age and condition of your existing paint. You’d be surprised at how much difference a fresh paint job can make in the appearance of your home.
Declutter
Getting rid of the things you don’t use often by throwing them away, selling, donating, or putting them into storage is a great way to make your home feel clean and fresh as well as a great way to make some extra cash or do a good deed. It also helps you get organized before summer shenanigans begin and makes your home look fantastic. Try starting with those closets like the coast closet, the one in your primary bedroom and the kitchen pantry. Those are the places that tend to get the bulk of the stuff in them during the winter. Once it’s warm enough, try putting winter clothes in a different bedroom closet so the clothes you use daily are easier to see. I find this helps me better utilize all the clothes I have, and I can more easily put together a cute outfit with something I may have forgotten I have. Cleaning out the kitchen pantry helps me be more organized when cooking my favorite meals and it helps to keep track of what I have so I don’t buy multiples at the grocery store because I didn’t see an item in the closet. Lastly, if you have children, it’s time to go through the toys and decide what to keep and what to get ride of. Kids outgrown toys so quickly and there are many organizations that welcome lightly used donations for children in need.
Spring Decorating
This part is my favorite. After I’ve cleaned my house and decluttered, I love to put out the spring decorations. That means flowers in vases, light, and airy curtains, throw pillows and new bed and bathroom linens with light springtime colors. I even like to switch out area rugs that have a fresher feel to them. Plus, it gives me an opportunity to get the ones I’m not using currently cleaned for next winter. Make sure to have your windows professionally cleaned during this time of year so that sunlight shines in on all the beautiful treasures you’re putting out. And if you need some decorating tips, keep an eye on my blog for more information at www.omahaprioritygroup.com/blog We put lots of great seasonal info out twice a week.
Happy springtime ya’ll!
There are many great places in Nebraska to do a bit of antiquing if you so desire and it all depends on what you desire. If you are interested in super upscale antiques, there’s always Southeby’s and Christie’s but if you’re looking for something more budget friendly than Nebraska is the place to be. Here we have everything from large antique malls to boutiques shops that specialize in restored pieces to retore it yourself antiques or, as I like to call them, well loved. Depending on what type of hunt you enjoy, you can hit some of our more metropolitan area and shop chic or you can go country and hit the small, small town locals. And for the pickers, we certainly have our rural antique dealers who use their properties as giant yard sale style antique dealerships.
Brass Armadillo Antique Mall
I love this place. It is the ultimate vintage shopping experience. You can find all the most wonderful treasures you like down the many isles of the warehouse style antique mall. There are smalls and some not so smalls both old as well as new. They host seminars, workshops, training events and social gatherings in a warehouse style space. In addition to Nebraska, they have two locations in Arizona plus Colorado, Iowa, and Missouri. They host over 3,500 dealers who sell all kinds of collectibles. Their web site has a blog with useful information about antiquing and how to care for antiques plus information on what’s hot in the collectibles world. They even have a points program called Antique Army. Drop by and find out for yourself what a gem this place is. Find more information at https://www.brassarmadillo.com/
Junk Stock
Spring is in the air and so is Junk Stock. It’s a wildly popular antique event featuring fabulous vintage, antique and junk vendors along with makers, food trucks and bands. It happens twice a year and the first one is April 30the through May 2nd and May 7th – 9th located on the western edge of Omaha right off of 228th & W Dodge (1150 River Road Drive, Waterloo, NE 68069). Junkstock is known for being one of the best vintage festivals in the country, but most people don’t know that it started as a small idea of a local dreamer and small business owner. Sara Alexander, the Founder and Mother of Junkstock, is very humble about her success. In 2011 she started some small junk sales in a rented chicken coop at an old dairy farm in Western Omaha. That was so successful that in 2012 she opened a small store in downtown Papillion called The Junque Factory where she sold her unique repurposed items. In the spring of 2012, Junkstock was hatched up and it was born later that June. Junkstock started with 29 vendors and quickly turned into a pilgrimage for junk, vintage, and handmade lovers from across the country. Junkstock remains a locally owned small business, but now features over 200 vintage, antique, and junk vendors that are joined by makers for the magical festival three times a year. In the spring of 2012, Junkstock was hatched up and it was born later that June. www.junkstock.com
The Grain Bin
Clustered on a hilltop in the scenic canyons south of North Platte, Grain Bin Antique Town consists of twenty historic grain bins and a massive barn that are connected by a boardwalk to form a huge and eclectic collection of antiques and primitives. Many of the individual bins contain unique collections from specific area collectors and dealers. You’ll find everything from old signage and advertisements to farm implements and even cow skulls to go along with all the other eclectic flotsam and jetsam you’d expect from well-sourced dealers in rural America. www.grainbinantiquetown.com
Well as they say with fatty foods…it’s alright in moderation. Used to accent a wall, and if it’s unique, wallpaper can be stunning. Back in the 70’s everyone wallpapered everything. I’ve even seen it on ceilings. Yikes! Then designers were very anti-wallpaper for a while and you rarely saw it used. Now the trend is to use it to add a pop of color and pattern. With some styles of wallpaper, you can use it on more than one wall but it’s rarely good to put it on all the walls in one room. Too much of it may not be esthetically pleasing to everyone and, if you decide to sell your home, you may wind up removing a lot of it because it may not be appealing to the masses.
Borders and Bold Patterns
In our Yorkshire model I used a border in the office in a brownish mauve color with antlers on it that went with the theme of the home. I ran the extra wide border along the top of the wall to create a little contrast above the wainscoting. It turned out to be the focal point of the room and gave it a little pizzaz if you ask me. In the loft of this homes, I created a large accent wall of plaid but rather than make it too bold with color, I chose a blue and grey plaid so and it softened the room while still creating an accent. Both choices were a little different yet still appealed to different tastes. Some buyers liked it and didn’t even know those designs would appeal to them.
Don’t Forget the Basement
Basements are typically not decorated like the main parts of the house in that they are often left utilitarian and plain. In our Prairie Zen model, which is overall a modern home, I decided to soften the basement by accenting the main focal wall. The brown birch trees in on a cream background in this paper added some dimension to the room and little color without overpowering the modern, simple lines of the bar area and the rest of the space, essentially breaking up the one large open space.
Boho is Back!
In our Organic Modern model, I used a muted weaved boho pattern wall paper on each side of the fireplace above the built in cabinets. It created a great pop of color without going too terribly bold and the pattern was interesting enough to contrast the rest of those rooms. As you can see, the fireplace has a tile with pattern but it’s mainly two colors, so the wallpaper didn’t conflict with it but rather complimented it and, again, bringing in some color. In the basement I added paper to a small wall with built in shelving to it’s left. It makes the wall look off centered and provides dimension to a space that might otherwise look too cramped.
Geometric and 3D Effect
Most of what we’ve seen so far has been wallpaper you’re use to seeing used in interesting ways. Geometric shapes are making a come back in furniture and, surprise, surprise, geometric shapes are coming back in wallpaper as well. Here you can see that there’s not only interest created in the shapes on this wallpaper, but it also has a metallic flare to it which gives it even more dimension and pop. Another neat new paper is the 3D effect paper which gives the illusion that you have something 3 dimensional on the wall when it’s really flat surface wallpaper. A less expensive way than using actual 3-dimensional tile for instance on a wall. What will they come up with next?
Staircases are staircases are staircases. Not the case in our Nathan Homes custom homes. They are designed to be the centerpiece or focal point in some cases making them practical of course but also a beautiful showpiece that is esthetically pleasing and an accent that amplifies a space. Obviously, we need stairs in our houses, but they don’t just have to be unseen elements, they can be artwork as well making one imagine a storybook entrance in an old movie or causing you to wonder where they lead. Grand and traditional or modern and unique are only two of the styles we strived for in our models. Come take a tour with me in this week’s blog and see for yourself that staircases are not just staircases.
Lakeside Luxe
Is the name of the model we designed and built this staircase for. The goal was to have the staircase where it was practical but since it was in such a prominent place in this two-story home it had to have some joie de vivre so to speak. The iron hand rails, and horizontal balusters create an elongated look that lengthen the look of the stairway and give it a grand feeling. Of course, the colors match flooring and overall décor but you’ll notice there is variation in the colors to give the railing a tiny bit of contrast. We decided to carpet the steps but give them a more contemporary look by leaving the outer string of the stairs has exposed dark stained hardwood flooring underneath the carpet which contrasts the carpet as well as the main level flooring.
The Prairie Zen Model
This one is not so much the staircase that’s amazing although the modern iron railing with horizontal cabling is impressive as it is the loft accenting that is impressive. As an alternative to a railing between the second-floor loft and the steps we created a vertical wood baluster wall for safety and style instead of using dry wall. It opens the loft and gives you a clear view of the stairway and the medium stain gives it color and contrasts the light carpet and walls. It kind of gives the loft a mid-century modern feeling while keeping it open and airy. And the price point for this particular design was as pleasing as the look.
Avalon
Is not only the model name for this home but by definition it is an island represented as an earthly paradise. The perfect name for this home and the perfect showpiece staircase inside. Rather than putting a traditional height railing in between the staircase landing and the staircase itself, we put in a vertical wood baluster wall for safety and define the entry area. This home is modern and has clean lines, so the baluster wall fits in perfectly. The medium color stain on the wall contrasts lighter hard wood flooring as well as the black iron hand railing on the opposite side of the steps. The fact that it is a floor to ceiling creation makes the space look taller and leaves it open to the area beyond. All of those combined make this simple piece look like a work of art.
Modern Chic
This home has over 5,000 square feet, is decked out head to toe and the staircase is by far my favorite. It’s the piece de resistance of the entire home. And that’s saying something in this place. You must take a look at the photo because words just don’t do it justice. The two inch by two inch slatted wall on the steps going from the first to second level in place of a railing or where you might traditionally have dry wall gives the stairway a grand feeling while also hiding it from the main living space. The design of is unique and oh so pleasing to the eye with vertical slats and some smaller horizontal pieces offset in between them. It’s stained a luxurious medium to dark color which coordinates perfectly with the carpet and stair strings painted white. Absolutely delightful and artistic.

Today’s topic du jour is food. Spring is just around the corner and if you want to maximize your exercise routine to get in shape for the summer than you must consider your diet. And by diet, I don’t mean the kind where you reduce calories to lose weight. What I mean is a healthy diet that keeps your metabolism and your weight proportionate to your natural physique. In other words, you should have the physique that fits your body frame. Diet is huge part of overall health and eating clean doesn’t mean you have to give up on tasty meals, it just means cutting out obviously and some not so obviously unhealthy foods.
Sugar
Now we all know that eating a lot of sweet foods isn’t good, but did you know that you’re getting even more sugar than you think. It’s not just about the candy bar you ate but the foods you don’t even think about. Take, tomato sauce for instance. There is plenty of added sugar in it and it’s the sort of food you don’t even consider when you think about cutting sugars out of your diet but there are 10 grams of sugar in one cup of tomato sauce. Fruit juices are another one. Most juices have added sugar, not just the natural sugar that comes from the fruit itself. If you want to avoid getting the extra sugar, go for an all-natural fruit juice. Those will be sweetened by only the fruit itself. Don’t take for granted that something organic will not have added sugar. Real the labels. You’ll be surprised. Just by changing up a couple of the brands you buy or cutting out foods that you probably don’t eat a lot of anyway, you can cut a lot of sugar out of your diet.
Keto
“Ketogenic” is a term for a low-carb diet (like the Atkins diet). The idea is for you to get more calories from protein and fat and less from carbohydrates. You cut back most on the carbs that are easy to digest, like sugar, soda, pastries, and white bread. Eventually your body will be in a state of ketosis which means that it’s burning more body fat and less carbs from the food you eat. If you’re a meat eater, then this is an easier diet for you to follow. You’ll feel better and lose the extra weight that you naturally shouldn’t be carrying around. If you have high cholesterol, check with you doctor first on this one because you’ll be eating more fats than normal which could contribute to higher cholesterol levels. And I’ve heard tales about the “keto flu” said to be fly like symptoms you experience when you first begin eating this way but didn’t experience them myself.
Paleo
Also, a great diet plan for meat eaters. The theory is that you won’t eat anything a cave man would not have eaten. It’s a little trickier in terms of sticking to this lifestyle because you must make more of a concerted effort to think about what you’re eating before you eat it. No processed foods since obviously a cave man would have that, no wheat just meat and veggies for the most part. The nice thing about eating this way is that it’s pretty popular and you can save yourself the hassle of trying to think up recipes that give you diversity in your meals by subscribing to a meal delivery service. There are several companies that provide this service and they cost around the same as buying groceries for those meals. Plus, you can choose to have already prepared meals delivered or ingredients for meals that you prepare yourself. I’ve used a couple of these services and they all seem to be similar in service type and price. The only inconvenience is choosing the meals that you want each week in such a way as to get diversity and not get repeats after a few weeks.
Lectin Free
A lot of us have sensitivities or allergies to lectin just the way some are lactose or gluten intolerant. Lectin is a type of protein mainly found in plants the binds to carbohydrates. Lectins are found in all plants, but raw legumes (beans, lentils, peas, soybeans, peanuts) and whole grains like wheat contain the highest amounts of lectins. Certain types of lectins can prevent your body from absorbing other substances that have nutritional value which could eventually cause malnutrition. Some sources of lectins are considered seriously poisonous. Castor beans, for example, contain a potent lectin poison called ricin. Certain types of lectin may bind with the walls of your digestive system which can lead to serious problems. Eating one particular lectin, phytohemagglutinin, can lead to severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Avoiding eating these foods will keep you feeling better in your gut and allow you to be at the top of your game.
Grain Alternatives
There are many good grain alternatives for those of us considering any of these diets. I for one initially had trouble giving up breads when I first tried cutting our grains but eventually discovered there are a lot of breads that are made with grain alternatives which are an excellent substitute. Wild rice (which isn't technically a rice) contains almost twice the protein of brown rice and is high in several B vitamins, manganese, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium. According to one study, it has 30 times more antioxidants than white rice. I personally like the flavor of wild rice better than white. You've likely seen quinoa on restaurant menus but might not have tried cooking it at home—which is a shame. Quinoa is a seed and is exceptionally high in protein, fiber, and is low on the glycemic index. There are other alternatives like Millet, Teff, Wheatberry and Buckwheat. It is exceptionally high in protein, fiber, and is low on the glycemic index. I was skeptical at first but found out that all of these are as tasty to cook with as regular grain products.
How Do I Cook Clean?
Knowing that most of us don’t have the time or perhaps the creativity it takes to come up with and cook clean I did some research and found that you it can be as easy as searching the internet for Clean Recipes. My challenge was finding clean eating recipes that didn’t require too much time or extravagant ingredients. I found some great treats you can cook up rather quickly while sticking to a healthy diet at www.tasteofhome.com/collection/clean-eating-recipes Best of luck with your 2021 healthy resolutions!

Well…its’ that time of year again. Valentine’s Day. The day when we have the opportunity to properly acknowledge the ones we love. It can be a tricky one. For new love you must choose the most appropriate way to tell her or him that you care for them. Too much and it’s overkill. Too little and whoops you whiffed it. For couples that have been married for a long time, the trick is to keep it fresh. Here’s a tip for the guys. Don’t buy her a vacuum cleaner. We’re all staying indoors these days so you’re likely considering an at home celebration. Regardless of who you celebrate with, how you celebrate or what message you’re trying to get across, you may want to consider some design tips. So here you go. This week’s blog is designed to help make you the master of Valentine’s Day decoration.
K.I.S.S. – Keep It Simple Silly
Don’t go crazy trying to design something unique. The trick is to make someone feel good. Let them know that you cared enough to go the extra mile. Get the kids involved. Have them cut out some small paper hearts to throw on the dinner table for that romantic dinner. They will enjoy it and you’ve got instant decorations without all the fuss. Buy some fresh flowers. These days the grocery store usually has beautiful arrangements at budget friendly prices. They’re a nice way to decorate and she will love them. Plus, they smell good. Maybe buy a few too many so you can spread them around and fill up the room. Go to your local arts and crafts store. They are guaranteed to have some holiday related items that you can use to decorate. Some of them, you can customize yourself with paint, etc. You don’t have to spend a ton or stress out trying to come up with neat ideas for decorating.
Go Neutral
You don’t have to go all pink and red to decorate for this occasion. In fact, it might be nice if you could keep the throw pillows and other things all year round. Buy neutral-colored items with hearts or sweet things written on them to compliment the holiday without having to have specific items that you must take out for one day then pack away for the rest of the year. You’d be surprised at how much love décor there is out there that can be used all year long.
Going All Out
Now if you’re the type of person who really likes to go over the top, this can certainly the occasion for that. Whether you just needed an excuse to throw a party or you’re having a romantic dinner with you’re significant other, there are so many options for doing it up on Valentine’s Day. I like the Linen Gallery for decorating the table. Try putting out some red or pink fabric napkins, using holiday specific place mats, plates, wine glasses or a table runner. You can even find kitchen towels to do it up. If you like, throw some colored glass on the table for a little sparkle which you can easily get at the arts and crafts store. Flowers, flowers and did I say flowers. Add some to the table whether fresh or artificial and it adds some nice color. And don’t forget candlelight. Candles make the atmosphere romantic; they smell good and add color.
Don’t Forget the Mantle
It’s my favorite place in the house to decorate. Why not, it’s usually the focal point of the room so it’s a great place to make a love statement. I love greens for the filler and I also like a couple of statement pieces on either end of the mantle. You’ll want to have a center piece as well to begin with and build off. Try a bundle of flowers, a large heart or a small to medium sized piece of artwork. And let it all hang out with some garland to dangle down in strategic places from the mental. Perhaps in a swag pattern. Also add some red berries for pops of color. Put together the right way, your mantel will be a beautiful way to celebrate the day.
